What is Urdu?
Urdu is a commonly spoken language in many parts of the world but is most commonly found if you were to spend time in South Asia. It is a national language in Pakistan, and has become a major part of the language culture of the country and beyond. It is also a language that is recognised as part of the Constitution of India and is therefore spoken by many Indians. Indeed, it has a form of official status in some regions within India.
It shared some similarities with Hindi, as both use some Indo-Aryan vocabulary and also share some similarities in their syntax and their phonology. They have quite a lot in common with classic Persian, too, so these are languages with a long and rich history. The language became a literal language in the 18th Century and since then has become a major part of the language culture of the region.
Primarily, two forms existed – one form in Delhi, and one in Lucknow. Other standards of Urdu can be found in other parts of the world, including Karachi and Deccani. Deccani, though, is considered an obsolete form of Urdu.
Records suggest that Urdu is the 21st most spoken language in the world, with around 66 million people in the world speaking Urdu as their primary language. However, it might also be a spoken language, even as a secondary language, for some 170 million people in the world.
